CANAL SCENE Q & A
CANAL SCENE
In Pacino’s Merchant of Venice (2005), did they really kill the goat?

There’s a scene at the beginning of The Merchant of Venice where a butcher slits a goat’s throat, and you see it bleed into the canal and all. I looked for the “no animals were harmed in the making of this film” disclaimer at the end of the film but it wasn’t there. Does this mean they really slit the poor animal’s throat on camera? Isn’t that gratuitous? It doesn’t really add anything to the scene.
There is no information on that weblink that is helpful. I already own the film, Betty. Read the question before you “answer”!!

Maybe they did and maybe they didn’t. The American Humane Association’s film and tv unit monitors the treatment of animals on set. But monitoring is done at the request of the production. If the production did not ask for monitoring, then the disclaimer would not be there. If they monitored the action and an animal was injured by a willful act or negligence, the disclaimer would not be there either. If an animal was injured or killed by accident, then the disclaimer would just say that the action was monitored by AHA. This film does not show up in their database, it was not monitored so you don’t really know if this was a special effect or if they really killed the goat. You can look up films in their archives here:

If you have concerns about a film and you do not see the AHA disclaimer at the end of the film you can email them at info@americanhumane.org .
